b. 1970, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Based in Times Square in New York, Van Helden had, by the mid-90s, supplanted Masters At Work as the most in-demand remixer in the music industry. However, Van Helden himself was troubled by this reputation. As he told the UK's New Musical Express: "The perception in England is that I'm rolling in cash, but I could make a lot more money if I was a real entrepreneur and said yes to every remix I got offered." As a testament to this, he claimed to have turned down offers to work with Mick Jagger and Janet Jackson in the same week in 1997.
Van Helden's childhood comprised several foreign postings (his father was in the service of the US armed forces), though he eventually settled in Boston, losing much of his youth to cocaine addiction. Although he was a high-profile DJ on the American and continental European circuit for several years thereafter, his breakthrough in Britain came in 1996 with his house remix of Tori Amos' "Professional Widow", which topped the UK charts. Previously he had recorded "Witchdocktor", an underground club favourite that regularly accompanied Alexander McQueen's fashion shows. Though a veteran of several different styles of house - including the techno, trance and tribal variations - his solo debut album was rooted in hip-hop (vocal samples included the Wu-Tang Clan and KRS-One).
At the end of January 1999 Van Helden topped the UK singles chart with "You Don't Know Me", featuring vocalist Duane Harden. Later in the year he took part in a well-publicised battle of the DJs with Fatboy Slim in Brixton, London. The albums Killing Puritans (2000) and Gandhi Khan (2001) struggled to establish Van Helden as a serious album artist, and following the disastrous commercial reception of the latter he disappeared from the club scene for a couple of years. He returned in 2004 with a mix album for Tommy Boy Records. One of the best tracks ("Hear My Name") was lifted for the following year's Nympho, which also included the pop hit "My My My".
