Don Omar
b. William Omar Landr¢n, 10 February 1978, Villa Palmeras, Puerto Rico. Omar emerged in the mid-00s as one of the rising stars of reggaeton, the addictive dance music that spread like wildfire from the clubs of Puerto Rico to mainland Latin American audiences at the start of the new millennium.
In Puerto Rico, William Omar Landr¢n struggled to achieve his life's goal and become a famous singer. The youngster spent the latter part of the 90s on the sidelines of the local music scene, but received a lifeline at the start of the new century when he was offered a slot as backing singer with the popular duo Hctor Y Tito. He was talent spotted by the V.I. Music label and secured a recording contract in 2003. His debut, The Last Don, followed later in the year and quickly cemented Omar's status as one of the figureheads of the reggaeton scene. Reggaeton, the dance music of choice with young Puerto Ricans, was tearing up the island's clubs with its sensual fusion of native bomba and salsa rhythms, Jamaican reggae and US hip-hop. The Last Don tapped directly into the music's popularity, generating the club hits "Dile" and "Dale Don Dale" and quickly reaching platinum sales status throughout Latin America.
Omar's star rose inexorably over the next three years as, alongside fellow artists such as Daddy Yankee and Wisin Y Yandel, reggaeton crossed over to the North American market. The live version of The Last Don, the compilation Da Hit Man Presents Reggaeton Latino, and the studio album King Of Kings were all major bestsellers in that market. The latter reached the US mainstream Top 10 in May 2006.
