Eric Benet

b. 15 October 1970, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Along with Rahsaan Patterson, D'Angelo and Tony Rich, Bent is representative of the revival of the singer-songwriter tradition in modern urban soul. After gaining valuable experience as a featured singer with touring bands, Bent formed his own self-titled trio with his sister and his cousin George Nash Jnr. Having developed his own songwriting, he signed with Warner Brothers Records as a solo artist, writing and co-producing his acclaimed 1997 debut True To Myself. Heavily influenced by Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Sly Stone, the album's highlights varied from the slow-burning, confessional title-track and the romantic balladry of "I'll Be There", to the funky groove of "Spiritual Thang" and the cover version of Stone's "If You Want Me To Stay'. Following an acclaimed US support slot for Erykah Badu, Bent visited the UK to join Shola Ama and D-Influence on the 1998 Rhythm Nation Tour. Wyclef Jean was among many big name contributors to 1999"s mature sophomore set, A Day In The Life, which featured the R&B number 1 hit duet with Tamia, "Spend My Life With You". He graced the Billboard album chart again in 2005 with another fine collection.
