b. 1977, France. Part of the French DJ "brat pack" alongside Claude Monnet, DJ Gregory, Bob Sinclar, Julien Jabre and Dimitri From Paris, Solveig has drawn acclaim for his involvement in the Africanism project, for 12-inch singles such as "Rocking Music" (with Jay Sebag) and "Heart Of Africa", and for his transformation of Salif Keita's "Madan" into one of Afro-house's biggest ever anthems.
Former choirboy Solveig acquired his first set of turntables at the age of 13, sharpening his skills and strengthening his carpals through shows at friends' birthdays and weddings. Subsequent employment at the Champs Disques store on the Champs Elys‚es in Paris exposed the young DJ to a broad range of music and by the age of 18, he had his first residency at famous Parisian club, Le Palace. Apparently producing house tracks to feed his DJ sets (including those at residencies at notable Parisian venues such as Les Bains Douches and the Queen club), Solveig issued a series of his own productions, including "Heart Of Africa" and "Come With Me", via his own Mixture Stereophonic imprint. Such releases were the catalyst for Solveig's involvement in Bob Sinclar's Africanism project, a collection of DJ/producers fusing Afro-inspired rhythms with Western dance music. Although it could appositely be interpreted as "On The Floor", Solveig's debut artist-album Sur La Terre (2002), its creator says the title should be translated as "On The Earth" and was apparently named out of humility. Essentially a retrospective of Solveig's best work, Sur La Terre featured "Heart Of Africa" (with its narrative explaining why French people cannot dance), "Edony", "Rocking Music" and "Madan" and covered house, funk, soul, world music and disco. Tellingly, Solveig credited the album track "Linda" as a tribute to his "masters" Fela Kuti and Serge Gainsbourg, the Nigerian primary influence behind the development of Afrobeat and the French singer, composer and controversialist, respectively.
