Bandolero
by Olga Tanon
b. 13 April 1967, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Ta¤¢n has taken merengue, a style originated and promulgated by the Dominican Republic, and conquered a sceptical public in Puerto Rico. In addition to successfully importing merengue into a salsa-dominated island, she also established herself as one of the genre's few female stars. One of Puerto Rico's most recognizable sex symbols, she dominated newspaper headlines by having a child out of wedlock with baseball player Juan Gonzalez. Ta¤¢n received her first break as a professional singer in the late 80s with Las Nenas De Ringo Y Jossie, an all-female merengue group. Soon afterward she accepted an offer to be part of another all-female group, Chantelle. The unbridled success of Chantelle afforded her the opportunity to sign as a solo artist with WEA Latina. In 1992, her first album, Sola, went platinum in the USA and Puerto Rico. Her next album, Mujer De Fuego, was her debut as a producer, and it doubled the sales of her previous album. Her aggressive, unapologetically sexy delivery on songs like "Vendr s Llorando" and "Muchacho Malo' made her a tropical music phenomenon. Ta¤¢n's career continued to blossom with her third release, Siente El Amor, which also outsold her previous efforts. With her next album, Nuevos Senderos, she began to expand her style to include ballads, and she appointed Marco Antonio Sol¡s, a renowned regional Mexican singer and composer, to produce. In 1997, Ta¤¢n released the self-produced Ll‚vame Contigo, in which she returned to her emphasis on merengue. The album was nominated for a Grammy for best tropical performance. At the end of the 90s, Ta¤¢n released the Rudy P‚rez-produced, Te Acordar s De Mi. The album continued her experimentation with variations on merengue and salsa, and included a duet with pop singer Cristian. A subsequent move to Sony re-energized her career and her debut for the label, 2005"s Una Nueva Mujer, was her best for many years.
