b. Justin Crawford, 19 September 1965, London, England. Crawford is one half of acclaimed DJ duo the Unabombers and co-runs the "Electric Chair" club night in Manchester, an event judged by The Face magazine to be the Best Underground Club in the UK. Under his Only Child alter ego, he creates trans-genre dance music that draws on elements of future funk, deep house, hip-hop, disco, funk, and northern soul. Having grown up in Bingley, Yorkshire, Crawford was attracted to study in Manchester by the city's legendary vibrant music scene. Fortuitously, Crawford studies coincided with the explosion of the acid house scene in the city. Crawford co-formed the New Fast Automatic Daffodils in 1988, enjoying a series of independent chart hits in the early 90s.
When the "New FADs" folded in the mid-90s, Crawford astutely kept the apparatus that allowed him to make dance music, initiating his Only Child solo project. Packaged in a sleeve depicting a break-dancing astronaut, Only Child's 1999 debut, Satellites And Constellations, juxtaposed 80s-inspired disco, hip-hop, electronica and classic summer soul. The album featured guest appearances from Siron, Mancunian soul-singer Azeem, and Kriminul, one half of US duo, the Jigmastas. The latter reprised his appearance on the follow-up, Solitaire, alongside Paddy Steer, Veba, Kathy Brown, jazz vocalist Niko, and Amp Fiddler. Refreshingly, Only Child has said that he does not want to play live, since this would mean changing and re-interpreting his music. Rather, the DJ says he is happy to press acetates to play out in clubs. Only Child has also remixed for artists such as Hefner, Tosca, St. Germain, and labelmates Funky Fresh Few and Niko.
