This melodic rock band was formed in Switzerland during 1987 by guitarists Freddy Laurence and Claudio Matteo. Recruiting Math Shiverow (lead vocals), Marc Lynn (bass) and John Dommen (drums), they signed with Phonogram the following year. Influenced by Thin Lizzy, Europe and Scorpions, their self-titled debut appeared in 1988 to a positive media response. It was characterized by Shiverow's high-pitched but note-perfect vocals and the dual guitar attack of Matteo and Laurence. Sign In The Sky saw ex-Krokus guitarist Patrick Mason take over on vocals, and Brian Kofmehl replace Lynn on bass. It was a more mature album in several respects, with the songwriting displaying greater depth and a full, crisp production, courtesy of Stephan Galfas. A live mini-album followed, but China failed to receive the recognition that their talents deserved.
