Legends in their native Mexico, Mazatl n, Sinaloa's Banda El Recodo had released nearly 200 records before making their debut outside of the Americas. Part of the reason for the renewed interest in their music was their association with the la quebradita craze. This cowboy-hatted dance is a frenetic visual spectacle, and achieved massive popularity during the early 90s. However, unlike many of the groups that sprang up to sate Mexico's appetite for the dance, Banda El Recodo had a history spanning 55 years. They are the longest running "banda" in the world, and were the first such outfit to be recorded. Banda (literally "band" in Spanish) is a music for parties and festivals, characterised by its pounding blend of horns and percussion, with a repertoire drawn from Latin dance, jazz swing and classical.
Originally formed in 1938 in Mazatl n by band leader Don Cruz "Crucillo" Liz rraga (b. 1 July 1918, d. 17 June 1995), who had started his career in a traditional "tambara" marching band, Banda El Recordo employed up to 18 musicians playing trombones, trumpets, clarinets, tubas, and drums. The outfit had early hits with numbers such as "La Patrulla Americana", "Sanson Y Dalila" and "Nereidas". They backed Mexican film and music stars throughout the 40s and 50s, notably ranchera star Jos Alfredo Jimnez. Banda El Recodo maintained a busy recording schedule throughout this period, but their popularity was limited to the Pacific coast states of Sinaloa, Sonora and Jalisco, the traditional "hot spots" for banda.
The early 90s banda revival was based on the new wave of techno-banda outfits and the popularity of la quebradita. Banda El Recodo responded to the changes on the scene by bringing in a lead vocalist, Julio Preciado, to compete with the techno-banda acts. After the fuss over la quebradita died down, Banda El Recodo were in a good position to reap the benefits from the renewed interest in banda. In addition to numerous gold disc awards in Mexico, the orchestra was the subject of a 1994 film, Bury Me With The Band, which depicted the story of founder Don Cruz "Crucillo" Liz rraga. The band also recorded one album alongside Jimnez, arguably Mexico's most famous musician, and enjoyed a major hit with a version of Cuban band leader Beny Mor's "La Culebra".
Following Don Cruz's death in 1995, his son Germ n took over the leadership of Banda El Recodo. Germ n's brothers Alfonso and Joel also feature in the band, taking over vocal duties from Preciado who left in 1998. Three years later, Banda El Recodo recorded with hip producers Omar and Adolfo Valenzuela. The result, Contigo Por Siempre ..., included the smash hit single "Y Llegaste T£" and won the best banda award at that year's Latin Grammys.
