b. 13 July 1957, California, USA. One of the new breed of young salsa singer/band leaders to emerge from Puerto Rico in the late 80s. Vega comes with the impeccable pedigree of having worked with the great band leaders Willie Rosario, Eddie Palmieri and Louie Ram¡rez. When he was 10 years of age, Vega's family moved to Puerto Rico, where he later played conga with the group La Preferida. Vega began his professional career in 1978 as co-lead vocalist with Raphy Leavitt's band La Selecta. He departed to sing with Rosario's band for six years, between 1980 and 1986. On six of Rosario's albums, he shared lead vocals with Gilberto Santa Rosa. After leaving Rosario, Tony contributed vocals to Palmieri's fifth Grammy Award winner La Verdad/The Truth, and recorded with Ram¡rez.
Vega signed to Dominican promoter Ralph Mercado's new RMM Records label and made his solo debut with Yo Me Quedo! in 1988. The record was a bestseller and was still riding high in the Billboard tropical/salsa chart in the second half of 1989. The album was co-produced by arranger/trumpeter Humberto Ram¡rez (an ex-member and producer of Rosario's band), who single-handedly produced Vega's 1990 hit follow-up Lo Mio Es Amor. Vega's 1991 release, Uno Mismo, was another Humberto Ram¡rez production, and topped the Far ndula magazine chart in Puerto Rico. Not to be confused with the Tony Vega Band, a blues rock outfit from Texas.
