b. Heather Frith, 6 July 1968, Bermuda. This singer-songwriter's early childhood was spent on her family's yacht, sailing around the Caribbean (her brother is the reggae singer, Mishka). Frith's early interest in music intensified when, aged 19, she moved to Providence to study painting and film at the Rhode Island School of Design. She did not join in with the local rock scene but wrote music for her own films. Inspired by Patti Smith and Lou Reed, she soon started writing songs and recording demos, before moving to England and basing herself in south London. She made further demos and, in 1990, recorded the low-key mini-album These Walls for the British Academy Of Songwriters. Released under her birth name, this rare EP was later reissued as The First Recordings.
Nova then met ex-Killing Joke guitar player Youth, who released the limited-edition Glowstars on his own Butterfly label. Support slots for the Cranberries and Bob Mould followed as Nova's talent began to gain a wider audience. The raw live album, Blow, was recorded at the Mean Fiddler, London in early 1993 and released in October on the Big Cat Records label. In 1994, Nova collaborated with Youth on her first full studio album, Oyster, which included "Island", a controversial track about domestic abuse, and the radio hit "Walk This World". Protracted recording sessions meant that her major label follow-up, Siren, was not released until 1998. Although the impact of Nova's songs was slightly dampened by the glossy production, the album proved popular enough to become her bestselling release
Following the release of the live Wonderlust, Nova relocated to Bermuda to record her first studio set of the new millennium, South. The album, her last for V2, was followed by a self-published book of drawings and poems, The Sorrowjoy.
