A Man Called Adam was formed in 1987 in north London, England, by former members of the fusion band Expresso 7. Clubgoers came to know them through the distinctive vocals of Sally Rodgers (b. Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England), and the layered Chicago house sounds promulgated by musician Steve Jones (b. Coventry, Warwickshire, England). Paul Daley, later half of Leftfield, was also an early collaborator, alongside future members of the Sandals. Their debut releases were "A.P.B." and "Earthly Powers" for Acid Jazz Records, but after a short spell with Ritmo Records (for whom they released "Musica De Amor") they moved on to a major contract with Big Life Records. Their spatial and rhythmic experiments were immediately successful, despite an apparent awkwardness with lyrical construction. Easily the best representation of the band's mellow house sound was their minor chart success, "Barefoot In The Head" (number 60 when reissued in October 1990), which remained a highly respected club song well into the decade. It was followed by "I Want To Know", which was remixed by Steve Anderson of Brothers In Rhythm and Graeme Park, and became a major club hit.
Daley had by this point departed to join Neil Barnes in Leftfield. By 1993, the remaining duo's relationship with Big Life had soured and, following a spate of unsuccessful big budget remixes of their work, they were unceremoniously dropped from the label. The duo responded by forming the Other Records label with designer Steve Gribbin, which began in 1994 with the jazz-tinged disco of "I Am The Way". Subsequent releases included "Love Comes Down" and "Easter Song", and tracks by their dub alter ego, Beachflea. Rodgers and Jones involvement in the house underground kept them busy during the latter half of the decade. They also helped compile the initial instalments of the highly popular Real Ibiza series for React Music, a fitting tribute to their position at the forefront of the Balearic chillout scene. A Man Called Adam's second long-player, the jazzy pop masterpiece Duende, was finally released in 1998. Rodgers and Jones then signed a new recording contract with Pagan Records, debuting for the label in 2001 with the mix set Punta Del Este Sunset. The 2004 release All My Favourite compiled eight new tracks alongside the pick of the olderr material.
